Jump Start your Daily Practice

Purpose: To add some excitement to your normal practice routine.

Equipment: None needed.

Coaching Points:
At the University of Oregon we feel we have an answer to getting practice started in a manner that heightens energy and awareness, stimulates competition, and has practical carryover value for game situations. At least two days a week during the regular season and once a day during the preseason we begin practice with our FUJI series.
After ten minutes of ballistic stretching and at least two five minute warmup periods we go right into FUJI. The FUJI period only lasts 5-6 minutes so it is very intense and fast paced. Our FUJI series is our no huddle, up tempo group of plays that challenges coaches as well as players to be their best. We will practice this from a variety of personnel groups on both sides of the ball. This allows us to expose each group to no huddle procedures and mechanics. It also allows your coaches the flexibility of adapting to whatever injury situations affecting personnel that may occur during the season. We will utilize whatever formations are appropriate for those groups. It also allows you to practice 5-6 plays from a particular personnel group that fit a no huddle situation. Through daily repetition everyone can develop a better comfort zone, understanding, and execution of those plays.

The FUJI period of practice only lasts 5-6 minutes and is very intense and faced paced, involving a variety of personnel groups.

We place the ball on a hash somewhere between the minus 26-29 yard line. We do this so our receivers learn to align correctly on or off the LOS without the use of the yardline. An offensive and defensive team take the field and square off against each other. We utilize our "REACTION TEMPO" which means full speed live reaction to the ball but no cutting or tackling. We basically want to keep everyone up on their feet. We tell them "full speed eyes, hands, and feet, but most of all.....stay up!" Due to the competitive nature of this drill it is usually done in full gear or shells (helmets and shoulder pads).
Our offensive team and coaching staff are on one side of the field while our defensive team and staff are on the other side. They will run approximately 5-6 plays down the field. After every play regardless of the outcome (complete pass, incomplete pass, long run, negative play) the ball will be moved approximately 10 yards and placed down by a manager. You need two managers, one to clear the ball from the previous play and one to place the ball at the new yardline and hashmark. The head coach or assistant head coach yells out "right", "middle", or "left" for hash designation which usually correlates with what happened on the last play. Sometimes to increase the cardiovascular coefficient the hash placement can be random to place the maximum stress on the athletes. This drill gives you the opportunity to condition your athletes during the body of practice in a competitive, challenging manner. BR>

Both teams will hustle to the LOS and receive the signals from their respective sidelines. You may also employ arm bands if that is the mode of communication used for your no huddle offense. On the last play you can involve special teams if you want by calling for a fast field goal. You can add canned noise to simulate a crowd which does two things. It adds to the excitement factor for players and coaches as well as making hand signals the most important and viable means of communication. The more you can mimic game circumstances or environments the more applicable the drill. Once we have traveled the length of the field we turn it around and bring in a second group. We do the same thing back down the field. We will substitute individually as needed or desired during this period. Our coaches are executing their various game day responsibilities whether it be play calling, situation substitution, information gathering, coaching or signaling. We will have run 10-12 plays in a no huddle mode in 6 minutes or less.
The benefits are twofold. For coaches, it simulates the hurry up mode where play calling is not necessarily scripted. Play calling can be balanced (run/pass ratio) as in normal situations or it can be more situation specific as in the last two minutes of a half. It forces them to think and react instantaneously to the new hashmark and field position situation. Oftentimes our defense uses this drill to see some of their new blitzes at speed. The drill reinforces the mental gymnastics of no huddle communication and execution. It stimulates competition and pride for everyone involved. For the players, it forces them to get going and get moving early in practice. They are exposed to the pace and tempo of hurry up offense and the corresponding defensive response. There is the cardiovascular challenge of running 5-6 plays in a row with no break and the resulting benefit when accomplished with positive results. We do this throughout the entire season so both our FUJI (no huddle, hurry up) and CLUTCH (no huddle, last two minutes, must score) series are second nature to all of our first and second string players. They practice it several times per week in a very competitive atmosphere.
We feel that this drill not only jump starts practice but gives us valuable experience at the very important aspects of no-huddle football.
